Nitros are used to give the player an advantage in races in Nitro Type. They were also used to give the player an advantage in games in Nitro Math.

Using a nitro in Nitro Type
Nitros are used to skip a word or number while racing. Pressing the "enter" key on the keyboard or pressing the "return" key on mobile triggers a nitro to be used. Upon this happening, the animation for the custom nitro that the player has equipped plays and, the track pulses. Only one nitro per race can be used. Using a nitro does not increase or decrease WPM. When used at the end of a race, it can sometimes bring the WPM up or down by 1 to 3 WPM unexplainably.
Nitros are commonly used on words that are long or difficult to type, and when strategically used, it is possible for players to win many more races than otherwise possible. This practice has been criticized by some players due to the fact that nitro usage on longer words discourages actual typing practice. Skillfully using a nitro at the end of a race has been referred to by players as "nitrolling".
Players with Gold Membership can change their nitro animation from the default one via the Custom Nitros loot category.
In Nitro Math[]
Nitros could be used to turn all of the answers on the playing field into correct answers by pressing either the "enter" or "space" key on the keyboard during a game. Upon this happening, players could then collect any node to gain an extra point. Using a nitro would also fill the fuel meter. Only one nitro could be used per game.
History[]
How nitros are used has changed a lot throughout the years. Nitros were introduced with the release of Nitro Type. Initially, players could use up to three in a single race and earn 2 nitros by finishing first in a race and 1 nitro by finishing second. Nitros could also be bought for $2,000 each from the Dealership.
- On November 12, 2012, nitros could now be sold for $500 each in the Garage.
- On April 28, 2015, with the 2.0 update, nitros could now only be bought and sold in groups of 10 in the Dealership. Previously, they could be bought and sold individually.
- On September 7, 2016, an update occurred that made it where players who averaged a low WPM could no longer use 3 nitros. Specifically, players who averaged less than 10 WPM could no longer use nitros, players who averaged 11-20 WPM could only use 1 nitro per race, and players who averaged 21-30 WPM could only use 2 nitros per race. Anyone who averaged more than 30 WPM could continue using three nitros per race. In addition, nitros now run from bottom to top in the panel instead of top to bottom.
- In December 2018, it was announced that the ability to sell nitros would be removed with the start of the new year. However, nitro selling was not removed at the beginning of 2019. Travis then stated that the ability to sell them would be removed once he "figures out a better system for distributing nitros". The ability to buy and sell nitros was later removed with the release of v3.
- On November 30, 2019, the nitro system was changed extensively. All players are now given an unlimited nitro supply. Therefore the nitro reward for finishing in the top two in a race was removed and nitros were removed as a mystery box reward. The amount of nitros that could be used per race was also decreased from a maximum of 3 to 1.
- This change (unlimited nitros) was later reverted and then reinstated. No compensation was given to players who lost nitros under the old system.
- A news post a few days later explained why the admins made these changes. Specifically, they felt that the old system "favored veterans" since they "often had large stockpiles of nitros."
- Starting in Season 26, there were no more seasonal/event nitro achievements. This was done to appeal to players who don't like using nitros. [1]
- On April 10, 2020, the Hall of Fame category for the most nitros used was deactivated.
- On May 7, 2020, players that averaged 15 WPM or less could no longer use nitros. This was done to combat an exploit where racers would purposely lower their average speeds to 9 WPM for extremely short texts and use their nitro on the longest word, effectively skipping up to half of the entire text and thus increasing the amount of races one could complete in a given time by a drastic amount.
- On August 28, 2023, custom nitros were released, allowing Gold members to use nitro animations aside from the Default Nitro one.
- On May 13, 2025, following events replacing seasons, event nitro achievements were added back with Quick Burst.
Trivia[]
- In 2011, there was a glitch where someone could have negative nitros that added a word to the passage. Using these could damage their account. Obtaining more nitros would erase how many negative nitros they had. For example, let's say someone had negative 50 (-50) nitros and won 1st place in a race and got two nitros (+2). Then they would have negative 48 (-48) nitros. This glitch was later patched.
- Before being demoted from admin, asssa123 had talked about the admins' plans to:
- Reduce the chances of getting nitros in a mystery box (this was eliminated entirely with the unlimited nitros update).
- Have limits as to how many nitros a player could use in a certain amount of time (depending on their speed).
- Take away all nitro achievements. In fact, for Season 22 he had said that there wouldn't be nitro achievements and that they would most likely be replaced with friend racing achievements. However, this didn't happen, and there were two nitro achievements (Buggy Racer and I Have Fans!) and no friend racing achievements in Season 22. This did, however, eventually end up happening for season achievements (starting in Season 26), but not all achievements entirely.
